The vocal and drum performance will be comprised of Native American and Indigenous songs\, cantos\, arranged for the natural acoustics of the Cistern. Central to this presentation of songs from Deer Moon SisStars are songs for and about water\, the elixir of the earth. \nThis performance kicks off Colectiva Pochteca’s fall residency along Buffalo Bayou which includes inter-generational creative and cultural programs. The Colectiva has deep ties to the East End community. In addition to family ties and long-time current residents in the East End for over 30 years\, they hosted their first-ever free community classes at Eastwood and Mason parks as well as previous Indigenous Peoples Day community activities at Tony Marron park and annual memorial art exhibition for founding elder Daniel Antoon. \n  \nAbout Calmecac Indigenous Organization (Houston Aztec Dance & Drum Group)  \nCalmecac Indigenous Organization (Houston Aztec Dance & Drum) is dedicated to learning and teaching Mexicayotl (Aztec) dancing\, drumming\, and Indigenous culture with integrity\, pride\, and respect. Founded in 2014 by Abuela M’api Rainflowa and her three children\, who are from an eighth-generation Texan family and fourth generation family born and raised in Houston\, Texas\, the Calmecac creates educational sessions\, both public and private\, helping to establish a consistent Native American (Indigenous) presence in Houston for the past 25 years. \nMost recently\, the Calmecac\, in partnership with the Prairie Association of Texas\, has collaborated with the environmental sciences magnet at Lantrip Elementary this past school year where they have a community garden and a Brighter Bites food distribution site. They have also adopted Lantrip as the pilot school for the launch of the SEMILLAS program beginning with the rematriation awareness and recognition of indigenous lands event in March of 2023. The Calmecac and its founding family are currently the subject of a forthcoming PBS documentary series highlighting traditional communities across the United States.

DESCRIPTION:This event is canceled. \nFind your center and practice meditation in the spacious and tranquil Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern. Offered in collaboration with Union is Creation\, this meditation series will feature the use of singing bowls and wind chimes to encourage mindfulness and connectivity. \nGuests should bring their own cushions or mats and water only in a non-glass container. No food or non-water drinks are allowed inside the Cistern. Sound Healing Meditation can be loud for those with sensitive hearing. DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: All DACAMERA performances are now SOLD OUT!  For any additional guests wishing to attend\, we will be taking an in-person\, first-come-first-served waiting list beginning exactly 30 minutes prior to each performance time. \nThe next “Underground Sounds” is with vocalist Alexandra Smither and bassist Austin Lewellen on October 26 – 29 . Tickets are available starting Friday\, September 29 at 9am. \n**** \nJoin us for Underground Sounds\, a unique music series in the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern! \nThis fall\, four Houston-based music organizations will perform specially composed or arranged works that highlight the remarkable natural acoustics of the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern. \nAbout this program: DACAMERA has commissioned Houston composer Mark Buller (an alumnus of the DACAMERA Young Artist Program) to create a new\, site-specific work for the Cistern which will be performed by current DACAMERA Young Artists. \nTickets available starting Friday\, September 8 at 9am. \nCost: $25 \nPerformance Times: \n\nOctober 5 at 7pm\nOctober 6 at 7pm\nOctober 7 at 4pm\nOctober 7 at 5:30pm\nOctober 8 at 4pm\nOctober 8 at 5:30pm\n\n  \nDACAMERA is an internationally recognized producer and presenter of chamber music and jazz\, committed to bringing its audiences transformative musical experiences. DACAMERA’s Education and Community Initiatives have received national attention for its Young Artist Program\, a professional development program for outstanding musicians that emphasizes community advocacy and brings Young Artist-teachers into classrooms\, introducing music into STEM and humanities lessons.
