  • BBP is also planting a variety of plants and native grasses between Montrose and Waugh on both sides of the bayou.
  • The Lost Lake area is seeing major progress. Grading for the lake is being completed, concrete work for the upper cascade is underway, the parking lot is partially installed and most of the footpath along the bayou is complete. The building shell and roof deck for The Dunlavy is complete. In early February, the special event space contractors will begin constructing and outfitting the interior space.

  • At the Nature Play Area, steel framing for the picnic pavilion roof has been installed, and the suspension bridge and treehouse structures are going in.
  • The footpath system is nearing completion. Walkers and joggers, please note there are some gaps at Lost Lake and the McGovern Cascade where other construction must be completed first.
  • Work continues on lighting. Almost all trail lights are installed. More of the park’s lighting will be programmed in mid-January.

Your Questions Answered

May I have my dog off-leash in Buffalo Bayou Park?”

No. The City of Houston’s leash law is in effect throughout the park between Shepherd and Sabine and all areas along Buffalo Bayou. This means dog owners must maintain physical control of their dog. We encourage you to let your four-legged friends run free and socialize at the Johnny Steele Dog Park which opens on January 17. Read more.

Johnny Steele Dog Park

Johnny Steele

A group of thoughtful and caring donors joined together to name the dog park in honor of their good friend Johnny Steele. For more than 30 years, Johnny’s name has been synonymous with elegance and beauty as witnessed by the civic spaces and private gardens he has designed throughout our city and state. Johnny routinely applies his boundless energy, talent and enthusiasm to volunteer efforts including Buffalo Bayou Partnership. Honoring Johnny as part of Buffalo Bayou Park—one of our city’s most significant civic milestones—is truly fitting. Last month, the group of friends gathered at the Johnny Steele Dog Park to reveal their surprise to Johnny and celebrate his selfless dedication to his friends, family and clients.

BBP thanks all of the generous Johnny Steele Dog Park donors (pictured below at the surprise reveal): Karol and Paul Barnhart, Polly and Murry Bowden, Jenny Elkins, Cherie and Jim Flores, Elise and Russell Joseph, Cynthia and Anthony Petrello, Beth Robertson, Leslie Elkins and Shannon Sasser, Ginny and L.E. Simmons, and Judy and Charles Tate.

Nature Play Area Coming to Buffalo Bayou Park

enewsletter - play area towerThis park site will be unlike any other play space in Houston. Built along the slope of Buffalo Bayou, the play area contains features intended to inspire a love of nature within children. The 28,000-square foot area was designed by SWA Group with assistance from North Carolina State University’s Natural Learning Initiative (NLI), which specializes in creating places for play, learning, and environmental education.

All along the bayou there are opportunities to enjoy and embrace nature, but this space will be dedicated to our youngest park users where they can engage and enjoy the outdoors. Features of the nature play area include:

  • boulder rock scramble;
  • rolling lawn;
  • stream and waterfall;
  • climbing logs and stones;
  • sand and water play zone;
  • picnic pavilion; and
  • 33’ slide

The most compelling component will be a tri-level tree house with climbing net (drawing above). SWA landscape architect Scott McCready explains, “Designing on a sloping bayou bank was an interesting challenge but the result is an incredible space… a great ‘starting’ point for young kids getting their first bayou experience.”

Thanks to the Ray C. Fish Foundation’s $1 million gift, the play area and picnic pavilion are expected to be complete in June 2015. Details about a tree house naming contest and opening festivities are coming soon.

Behind the Scenes: Nature Play Area

To bring something truly special to Buffalo Bayou Park for young park users, Buffalo Bayou Partnership and SWA approached North Carolina State University’s Natural Learning Initiative (NLI). The team, including landscape architects Robin C. Moore, Director of NLI, and Jesse Turner, NLI landscape architect, provided their expertise of designing and programming nature play and learning spaces around the country.

The goal is to attract children to interact directly with nature. Curving, meandering elements of the play space were inspired by the movement of water, according to Moore. Equally interesting was designing this space in a major urban center. Nature Play & Learning Places: Creating and Managing Places Where Children Engage with Nature, a publication by The National Wildlife Federation and Natural Learning Initiative (with recommendations from around the country including our own Houston Parks & Recreation Department), was recently released.
