Hurricane Beryl Clean Up

Buffalo Bayou Park needs your help!

The Park sustained both wind and flooding impacts from Hurricane Beryl. After our crew’s hard work at removing debris and making paths accessible again, we will be taking both group and individual volunteers starting the week of July 15.

Anticipated volunteer projects will include cleaning the Houston Police Officer Memorial, restoring garden areas, working with our Conservation Team in native wildflower meadows and prairies, and assisting the Maintenance Team in continued debris removal and tree clean-up and preservation.

Our next open Volunteer Day is July 20th. We still have spots available, please sign up here.

We have flexible opportunities for individuals and groups to volunteer outside of the monthly Volunteer Day. For more information and available times, contact our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@buffalobayou.org.

Volunteer Spotlight:

LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce

In April, we had our highest monthly volunteer participation to date with over 630 volunteers. One of our larger events was the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce’s – LGBTQ+ Workplace Alliance Day of Service. Nearly 100 people from over 20 corporations and organizations worked on several conservation projects in Buffalo Bayou Park’s native grasses and wildflower areas.

This and other volunteer efforts helped us prepare for a vibrant wildflower season and for the site-specific art installation The Houston Monarch Story, part of BBP’s Summer Species program on view through November in the native prairie near the Jackson Hill Bridge.

Spring is our primary growing season and we’re grateful to have so many enthusiastic supporters. Buffalo Bayou is a dynamic landscape and each season has its own projects and focus areas. We encourage you to continue volunteering with us throughout the year!

Tasks can be modified to accommodate all abilities. When working outdoors, there are always precautions to consider. Here are some helpful tips for a safe experience:

– Stay hydrated
– Take frequent breaks
– Wear proper clothing
– Prepare for the environment
– Monitor weather conditions
