In connection with Make Music Houston, Buffalo Bayou Partnership presents a free musical celebration of summer solstice in Buffalo Bayou Park! From jazz to salsa, the lineup will have something for everyone to enjoy. Feel free to bring blankets and lawn chairs. Picnics are welcome, and food and drink will also be available for purchase throughout the day.
SCHEDULE:
12-1pm: The Jalen Baker Trio, DACAMERA Young Artist Jazz Ensemble-in-Residence
Featuring Jalen Baker, vibraphone; with Nils Aardahl on bass and Gavin Moolchan on drums. The members of the trio are the first emerging Houston-based jazz musicians to join DACAMERA’s Young Artist Program, which seeks to encourage musicians to develop the skills necessary to become passionate, forward-thinking, and community-focused “citizen artists.”
1:30-2:30pm: Jared Chapman
Enjoy Jared’s blues vocals accompanied by his acoustic guitar and drumbeat.
3-4pm: Monarch Chamber Players
Enjoy the classical sounds of the Monarch Chamber Players, a collective of Houston-based professional musicians committed to taking chamber music out of the concert hall and into accessible community spaces.
7-9pm: La Tribu Cubana
Get ready to move to the beat of Cuban salsa music with Charlie Perez and La Tribu Cubana. This trio is one of Houston’s premier Cuban bands, mixing both inspiring traditional Son-Montuno and modern Timba with funky, rhythmic, drum-breaks. Accompanying dancers are part of the ensemble.
First celebrated in 1982, and now observed in more than 1,000 cities, Make Music Day is an international observance open to anyone who wants to take part. Every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — pours onto porches, patios, neighborhoods to share their music with friends, neighbors, and strangers. All of it is free and open to the public. RSVP here.
